"The Sound Of Silence"

Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools," said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."

"The Sound Of Silence" was released in October 1964 as an acoustic ballad recorded by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.
The song was the lead single from their debut album "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M."
At first, the album and "The Sound Of Silence" were a commercial disaster (sold less than 2000 copies) and the duo were starting to break apart.
But then, producer Tom Wilson asked members of Bob Dylan's band to add electric guitar and drums to "The Sound Of Silence" and the song soon became number one in the US.
Simon & Garfunkel didn't know anything of the song's remix until after "The Sound Of Silence" achieved success.
Paul Simon wrote the lyrics of "The Sound Of Silence" one line a day over the period of six months.
In an interview, Paul Simon said of his inspiration:"I never would have wrote "The Sound Of Silence" were it not for Bob Dylan. I saw him as a major guy whose work I didn't want to imitate in the least."
In another interview, Paul explained: "We have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. "The Sound Of Silence" is about the inability to communicate."
"The Sound Of Silence" is one of the most successful songs of all time.
